Global Warming or Run-Away Asteroid –
Which Should We Fear More?
Book Review: “Pollen and the Ring of Harmony”
By author, Francis T. Perry Williams
If you worry about Global Warming, here is a threat to our planet you can really sink your teeth into: a huge asteroid is heading towards Earth arriving in just a few days. There is only one hope of salvation, Pollen. And our final concern is not how or if he will accomplish that task, but if he will find us worthy of salvation.
Pollen, is one of the “Twelve Bearers of the Ring”, who travel the galaxies to “protect life from unnatural disasters, and…warn civilizations they may destroy themselves by their disregard of nature.” This benevolent alien uses the Ring of Harmony he wears to search for, and create, harmony among humans so they will recognize and protect the beauty in nature around them. His initial contact with the human race occurs after landing his spacecraft near the Oregon-California border. Seeing the destruction of a pristine valley filled with thousand year old trees, he takes action. Shooting rays of rainbow light, he commands the valley “be as it was before” - it is so.
Connecting with Reb, an ill and aging hermit who had tried unsuccessfully to save the valley, Pollen uses his new friend to help him on his journey. Resurrecting a wrecked and rusty 1974 Gremlin, the pair head out in what is now a sparkling clean vehicle capable of tremendous speed. The speed is needed as Pollen is often distracted on his quest. Stopping to quench a blazing inferno in a California canyon, he restores houses burned to their former condition. He channels a tornado to prevent massive loss of life, and thwarts a bank robbery. A side effect of each of these events is seeing those affected become more aware of the needs of others. As Pollen says, ”Awareness leads to beauty, and beauty leads to harmony. Everyone needs to be needed. Everyone deserves to be respected and treated with kindness.”
Among those affected are a self-centered television reporter, her worshipping cameraman and her previously neglected daughter (who has earned suspension from school to gain her mother’s attention.) Seeing the blasts of media attention, the unscrupulous vice president is alerted to Pollen’s impending arrival. Taking advantage of this distraction, he executes a coup to take over the office of the president. Seeing Pollen’s Ring of Harmony as a Ring of Power, the official tries to take it from him.
The capture of Pollen after life-threatening wounds (having given his ring to his helper, Reb) endangers the survival of all mankind. Even the sighting of the on-coming asteroid cannot make the evil-doers stand down. Then, imagine a Green Army of a million humans, called up in exciting circumstances to help Pollen and rescue his supporters! Will the earth be saved? Will his Ring return to his hand in time to deflect the fire-ball heading our way? The exciting final pages keep the reader fascinated. This is first rate entertainment for both young readers and adult readers who enjoy works of fantasy and Sci-fi. I invite you to join the Green Army led by Pollen, the 21st Century’s First ECO-SUPER HERO.
