“Going green” goes beyond saving the environment

Eco-advocate, fitness guru says green living promotes healthy lifestyle

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – From hybrid cars to organic food markets, natural-fiber clothing to non-toxic toys, it’s clear the green movement has swept the country. More and more Americans are adopting ecofriendly lifestyles to play their part to reduce energy use, pollution and preserve natural resources. But the “greening” of America is doing more than saving the earth – it’s improving the health and well-being of its inhabitants, too.

Eco-advocate and sci-fi author Perry Williams says being in tune with environmental concerns on a daily basis promotes a healthier, happier lifestyle. By making choices like biking to work instead of driving, or switching to an organic diet, people are reaping the benefits of an eco-sensitive lifestyle that go above and beyond saving the environment.

“Today, ‘going green’ is about more than just adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle,” says Williams, who has more than 25 years experience as a personal fitness trainer. “The green movement is a state of mind, a philosophy, a constant awareness of how our everyday actions affect our surroundings. Not only does green-living create a healthier planet, it can also create healthier bodies and healthier relationships.”

Williams is the author of a new sci-fi book, Pollen and the Ring of Harmony (Bridgeway Books, April 2008), which encourages green-thinking. Written for young adults, the book tells the story of Pollen, an alien visitor from outer space who’s on a mission to save Earth from human destruction with the power of his mysterious, living ring. Accompanied by a group of friends he makes along the way, Pollen journeys across America to deliver a message to the president and the world – the Earth is about to be destroyed, and unless humans learn to live in harmony with nature and each other, even the powerful ring won’t be able to stop it.

“Pollen doesn’t understand why human beings are all about ‘me, me, me,’” Williams says. “Through this book, I hope to encourage others to shift the focus from the individual self to the world around us.”

In an interview, Williams can discuss topics such as:
  • How health and fitness play into the green movement
  • Tips for adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle
  • Why it’s important to live in harmony with nature
  • What you can do outdoors to help save the environment

Williams holds a degree in drama and a minor in art and music from San Diego State University, where he wrote, directed and acted in several plays. He appeared in a several sitcoms in the 1980s including “Happy Days,” “Bosom Buddies,” “Mash” and “Laverne and Shirley.” In addition to his acting career, Williams has experience behind the scenes as a contributing writer for “Laverne and Shirley” and a production assistant for Paramount Studios. A certified personal trainer, Williams offers private fitness training at the original Gold’s Gym in Venice Beach, Calif., where he currently resides.
